Off to Russell!
We took our first trip outside the Auckland area, taking the ferry across then driving to Russell, about half-way between Auckland and the northern tip of New Zealand (about 250 km away).
We stopped for lunch at Puhoi, an historic village north of Auckland. The bar we ate in was certain historic, as were the three locals we talked to over lunch. Note the "telegraph" aspect of the post office.
Of course, Alexander was more interested in the quality of the playground, which was really first rate. Looks like we should have named this blog "playgroundtourofnewzealand.com".
After a short ferry ride of Opua (the longer, scenic way around was washed out due to last week's rains), we arrived in Russell, where we stayed at the Triton Suites Motel, which turned out to be a briliant choice. Comfortable bed with very high quality sheets; a spa bath that we could all fit into; wonderful views over Russell and harbor. And just a short walk away from the restaurants and harborfront.
